Malawi soccer star jailed in Mozambique over drugs deal

Malawi football star Charles Kalaile was arrested in Mozambique after he was involved in a drugs deal. He was convicted  by the court and  is serving a six-month sentence in Cuamba Province.

Former Flames vice-captain Elvis Kafoteka confirmed the development, saying that the former Bullets star bought illegal hospital gloves and medicine from a doctor in Mecahnela Niassa Province, north-western Mozambique.

“While playing here, he bought hospital gloves and some hospital medicine from a doctor in Mecahnela and was planning to sell in Malawi,” Kafoteka said.

“Since he had problems with the club he dumped the club for another club in Cuamba Province.”

He said the doctor who was involved in the Kalaile scndala was charged to serve six months with three months suspended.”

Mozambique based player scout agent Nelito Pondamale said he was aware that Kalaile was on the run from the Police after finding himself on the wrong side of the law.

“All I can say is that cops were hunting for him over issues of drugs,” Pondamale said, without giving more details.

Kalaile was a beckon of hope for Malawi and had unsuccessful trials in China.

He also has a short stint with South Africa national first division side, Dynamos, a deal brokered by Kondi Msungama.

Kafoteka also said the soft-spoken midfielder would be released on 5 June.

The player, who also played for disbanded Super League outfit Blackpool, sneaked out to Mozambique last year without the blessings of his club Bullets FC.
