Malawi songstress Wendy arrested, out on bail

Malawi’s dance hall artiste Wendy Harawa was arrested on Wednesday by Chileka Police for duping Mwanza Motel K240,000  (about $600) in advance payment for a show which never was.

The controversial renowned female rapper demanded MK240,000 as advance payment for a show last year but she failed to turn up to peform.

Efforts by the border district motel management to press for a refund did not yield to anything forcing them to refer the matter to Police.

Southern Region Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa confirmed the development with Nyasa Times on Thursday.

Gondwa said after the Mwanza Motel management deposited the money into her account she had been playing monkey tricks until they lodged a complaint to Mwanza Police to bring her to book.

The long arm of the law finally got her in Chileka after Mwanza Police alerted other Police Stations in the country to track her down.

But Gondwa said the beautiful and sexy-often controversial musician, escaped a night in the cooler after her family came to her rescue by payment the whole amount to Chileka Police.

“She didn’t spend a night in Police custody because her relations came to pay the money at Chileka and she was released three hour after she was arrested,” Gondwa said.

“She has been advised to report to Mwanza Police where they will see whether to continue with the case or not depending on the complainant’s wish.”

He also advised the celebrities and public figures of Wendy’s calibre to be exemplary.

“I would like to advise celebrities and such public figures to behave well because people look up to them as role models,” he said.

Last year she was arrested over a similar incident bolting with Zambian musician Mampi’s MK300,000 she pocketed for organising a show.

Wendy is no short of controversies as she has been found on the wrong side of the law several times.

But the musician claimed she missed the show because the truck of Zembani band she had hired had a breakdown and she could not reach Mwanza in time for the show.

“I was approached by Kaminjolo to invite Orga Family of Zambia to perform at the hotel, but the trip was affected because we had a breakdown and there was also fuel problems and we arrived late,” she said.

Harawa said she wanted to pay the money back with a first installment of K50,000 but accused the hotel manager Mercy Kaminjolo frustrated her.

“I feel very harassed,” she said.

Music icon Lucius Banda backed Wendy, saying the issue should have not involved police because Wendy did not dupe the hotel but “had genuine reasons to miss the show.”

“Wendy had breakdown but they should have rescheduled the show,” said Lucius Banda.

Singer Skeffa Chimoto was also reportedly forced to pay back money to Mwanza Hotel after he was involved in a car accident and failed to perform.
