Malawi student found dead in university hostel, cops say suicide: Bunda

A 23-year-old student at Bunda College of Agriculture, a constituent of Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources was found dead inside his hostel room on college campus.

Police said Yobe ‘Magongoninga’ Mfune ended his life by hanging himself using ropes from a travelling bag.

The student, in the final year of his Degree in Environmental Resources Management studies, was found dead hanging in the wardrobe in his room, police said.

“He was living with his relations who work at the university who are currently away. When he went missing on the 6th of May, the maid and a girl who shared the house reported the matter to university authorities,” said National Police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo.

“They reported that his room was shut. On Friday, a crew of maintenance officials took the door down and smelled stench of a rotting body, but could not see anything. They opened the wardrobe and there he was hanging. He had hanged himself using ropes from a travelling bag,” said Manjolo.

A post-mortem established that the cause of death was self-strangulation, according to police.

Mfune in a recent Facebook status wrote: “I will have a recollection on my life since I was born up to now, therefore, I will not pay attention to some of the things coz it will be my God and I….”

Mfune hailed from  Mphangala Village, T/A Chikulamayembe in Rumphi.
