Malawi suicide file: Man hangs in a Mosque toilet, teenager takes life

A twenty-five-year -old man of Area 36 in the city of Lilongwe was found hanging dead in a toilet annexed to a Mosque.

Deputy Public Relation Officer for Lilongwe Police, Kingsley Dandula said that the deceased Rosten Katambilo was found hanging dead at Amina Mosque in Area 36.

According to an eye witness Shafe Mussa, who found the deceased hanging as he visited the toilet, was shocked and informed elders who look after the Mosque at the time they were reciting prayers.

The elders then reported the matter to police who took the dead body to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), where postmortem results are expected to be released to establish the cause of death.suicide

Dandaula said according to what they had gathered the deceased was reportedly mentally disturbed.

The deceased hails from Chipalamawamba village in the area of Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi district.

In Nkhotakota, a  16-year-old boy committed suicide by hanging himself on obscure grounds, Police have confirmed.

Nkhotakota Police Spokesperson, Kaitano Lubrino said Mustapha Nkhoma of Njiramchiuno Village in the area of Senior Chief Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota committed suicide on Sunday night.

Lubrino said Nkhoma who was sharing bedroom with Mustapha Madi, 21, of the same village had a tendency of staying in lonely places.

“Madi has told Nkhotakota Police that during the material night, the deceased left the bedroom around 1:00 am and he thought Nkhoma had gone outside the house.

“Madi thought his colleague had gone to respond to the call of nature or had gone to garden to work,” he said.

Lubrino said Madi decided to look for his colleague around 4:00 am, after realizing that he was not coming back.

“In the course of searching for him, Madi found the deceased hanging dead in one of the rooms in the same house,” he said.
