Malawi tax body seizes documents from Chakwantha law firm: MCP lawmaker accused of tax evasion
The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), on Thursday, , conducted a search at the business premises of Armstrong Oils and Car Accessories in Lilongwe – owned by opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) lawmaker Peter Chakwantha – on suspicion of tax evasion offences.
MRA’s Deputy Director Corporate Affairs, Steven Kapoloma told Nyasa Times that the search resulted in the seizure of some business documents from the company.
“The operation follows a tip alleging that Armstrong Lawyers and Company, Armstrong Oils and Car Accessories and Armstrong Agro Trading, owned by Hon. Louis Peter Chakhwantha, M.P has not been remitting correct amount of taxes in form of Value Added Tax (VAT) and Income Tax,” Kapoloma said.
The documents seized during the operation are being analysed to verify the allegations made against Chakwantha and his law firm, MRA said.

Most law firms evade tax. If this exercise was done to all legal firms, the country would surprised how much government is losing each month in undeducted or unremitted tax returns.

Obviously, politicians like everybody else are prone to criminal activity, especially white collar crime. Greed and other features of human nature apply. The days when politicians were absolutely untouchables when it came to these kinds of crimes were gone with Kamuzu. He and his coterie were really heavy on tax evasion: they practiced what could be termed reverse taxation, whereby they actually took money from MRA – who knows how much, since there was NO accountability.
