Malawi teen boy arrested for selling his brother

An eighteen year old boy is in Police custody at Balaka district for allegedly offering for sell his 10-year old blood brother.

Station Operations Officer for Balaka Police Station Assistant Superintendent Gideon Chisale says the suspect Sole Sekani 18, who is a fourth born in a family of eight wanted to sell his 10 year old brother to a certain businessman in the district at a price of K1.9 million.

“When the businessman heard this; he told him to come the following day with the boy and then informed the Police who raided the house.

“When the suspect came with the boy, he was taken to the veranda of the house where they started negotiating on the price and at this time, the Police was at the seating room inside the house hearing all the conversation.

“He even reduced the price to K1.3 million and promised to bring another one,” says  Chisale who was at the scene.

And just after their conversation, Chisale says, the police arrested the suspect and he has been charged with a case of selling a child which is an offence under Childcare Protection and Justice Act 2010.

“Upon interview, the suspect said he wanted to sell his blood brother because he has a lot of problems which he wanted to solve and said he managed to bring the victim by asking him to escort him to the Trading Centre,” says Chisale.

Meanwhile the victim has been surrendered to his parents and the suspect is expected to appear before court soon.

Sole Sekani comes from Phimbi village, Traditional Authority Nkaya in the same district of Balaka.
