Malawi TNM Super League opener: Lilongwe derby to be decided on emotions

Head coach for Malawi TNM Super League champions Silver Strikers, Franco Ndawa believes that emotion will play a big part as they launch their title defence in their capital city derby against bitter rivals Civo United at Civo Stadium on Sunday.

According to the opening fixtures for the 2013 TNM Super League season released by Super League of Malawi (Sulom), the bankers will be at home away from their usual home of Silver Stadium against the civil servants at the territory of their opponents.

Ndawa said there is traditional rivalry between Silver and Civo, saying the league opener will be crunch tie but strongly believes passion will determine the winner of Sunday’s tie.

“It will be emotion that will decide the game. They will be under pressure to utilize home advantage,” said Ndawa.

Civo coach Thom Nkorongo, who has just been confirmed as head coach for the government sponsored side, was fired from Silver and believes he has made good tactical preparations for the explosive derby.

“We are ready for the game,” said Nkorongo, “it will be difficult but we have prepared very well.”

In fixtures scheduled for Saturday, Mighty Wanderers host Epac at Kamuzu Stadium with Blue Eagles visiting Moyale Barracks at Chitowe Stadium.

Red Lions will be at home against fellow soldiers Mafco at Zomba Community Centre as new comers Mponela United start life in the elite league with a home fixture against Kamuzu Barracks at Nankhaka ground.

Elsewhere on Sunday, in form Big Bullets face Blantyre United at Kamuzu Stadium as new comers Super Eagles welcome Blue Eagles at Chitowe.

Other league debutants Envirom will have their first test against Epac at Zomba Community.

The game involving Azam Tigers and Mafco, which was initially scheduled for Surestream Stadium on Sunday has been shifted to Kalulu Stadium as Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and the new ground owners finalise other logistics.
