Malawi to have a new beauty pageant: Miss Curvy

Following the footsteps of Miss Matofotofo, a beauty pageant for ‘big mamas’, a new competition for ‘curvy’ women has been introduced in Malawi.

Known as Miss Curvy Malawi, this is a brand new annual beauty pageant targeted at females aged between 18-40 years who are a size 12 and over.

According to organisers of the show, Lilongwe-based Excite Media, Miss Curvy Malawi will be held next year on April 13 at the magnificent Presidential Conference Centre in the capital city.

“This new exciting contest has been created to attempt to banish the “thin is in” ideas and attract healthy girls and women who are proud of the way they look,” reads a press statement released by Excite Media and signed by its Events Manager Robert Banda.

“Miss Curvy promotes a healthy attitude to body image. With a fresh approach to pageants, this competition is attempting to change the image of beauty pageants as being for stick thin models.”

As indicated in the statement, made available to Nyasa Times, the winner of Miss Curvy Malawi 2013 and her First Princess will for the first time represent the country at Miss Curvy Africa 2013 in Zimbabwe.

To be held on 13 August at Victoria Falls, Miss Curvy Africa is organized by Africa Beauty Association (ABA) and it is a beauty pageant for the Hour Glass Models (Curvy Models).

“The pageant seeks to celebrate African beauty through appreciating a uniquely built figure. Most pageants celebrate slenderness and pretty faces, which is a more Westernized way of appreciating beauty.”

“Most Africans are uniquely built but that does not make them less attractive, in fact, they are beautiful in their own right so the Miss Curvy competition honours beautifully built African women and they are called glass models,” the statement further reads.

Meanwhile, registration for Miss Curvy Malawi 2013 is now open and those interested to participate can register through email via [email protected]. Auditions are expected to be conducted in the country’s major cities of Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Blantyre where eight ladies will make it to the finals.

Registration is open to women who have a minimum of Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) and must also have a  hip size of 42 inch, flat tummy, should not be less than 1.7 metres tall and should be between the ages of 18 and 28.

The new Miss Curvy Malawi 2013 will enter into a contract, managed by the Excite Model for her tenure of office. Affixed tenure of office for Miss Curvy Malawi 2013 will be from April 2013 to March 2014.

Fabulous cash and material prizes await the 2013 Miss Curvy Malawi as the organizers promise to provide the winner and her deputies all the support with beauty and dressing requirements of the office.

Apart from the prizes for the winning girls, Excite Media has also prepared a special package for the public and after selection of the Top 8 finalists, the audience will take part in choosing the winner through the voting lines which will be announced then.

As such, the audience will have chances to win numerous prizes after voting for their favourite model.
