Malawi U-20 held by Zimbabwe in Cosafa opener

Malawi Under 20 National Soccer Team on Friday opened their 2016 Cosafa Under 20 Youth Championship campaign with a 0-0 draw in an early kick-off against Zimbabwe in a match played at Moruleng Stadium in South Africa.

The opening 25 minutes had no much of goal action as both sides struggled to settle down resulting into both goalkeeper on holiday and untested until the late in the first half.

Junior Flames Striker Francisco Madinga had his first attempt on goal in the 45 minute but Zimbabwe goalkeeper Chadya Nelson was alert and able to handle the situation.

In the second half, Malawi started on a high note with an early strike from Abel Mwakalima but was jealously saved by keeper Nelson who conceded a corner in the process.

Zimbabwe responded in the 70th minute  through a fierce effort from Clive Lupiya but goalkeeper  Christopher Mukuwa was alert to take care of the situation.

The Junior Flames had their penalty appeal turned down in the 81st minute when Bukhosi Ncube clearly brought down  Captain Mike Mkwate in the penalty box.

At the end of 90 minutes both sides settled for a draw.

Malawi play their second match against Zambia on Sunday.

Zimbabwe will be praying for a loss for the Junior Flames or that they lose four goals or above against Zambia.

Zambia lead Group B with 3 points after thrushing Zimbabwe 5-1 in the opening match on Tuesday 7th December 2016.
