Malawi U-20 invited for Cosafa Youth Championship

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says the the Malawi National Under 20 team has been invited to participate in the annual Cosafa Youth Championship to  be hosted by Lesotho  December 3-14.

The format commences with group stages,  and then knockout stages  up to the final.

Only players born on or after January 1, 1994 are eligible to participate.

FAM general secretary Suzgo Nyirenda said logistics are being put in place to ensure the team’s participation at the tournament.
“This is a very important tournament for the development of future players. Ever since we started taking part in the competitions we have managed to produce a lot of players and we cannot afford to miss this tournament,” Nyirenda.

Malawi has never won the tournament since its inception in 1997 but have been in the finals once in 2003 but lost to Zambia 4-0.

Last time the tournament was held was in 2011 in Botswana and Malawi finished fourth after losing 1-0 to hosts in the match for third place.
