Malawi U-20 rewarded for 3rd round CAF qualification

The Under-20 national soccer team has been rewarded with a K50,000 extra game bonus by Football Association of Malawi (FAM) in appreciation for qualifying for the CAF Youth Championship third-round.

The Junior Flames choked DRC 2-0 on Friday after a 1-1 draw in Blantyre in the first leg.

For a win, the Junior Flames normally get K15 000 each from government, but as a token of appreciation FAM has pledged an extra K50 000 each.

FAM general secretary Sugzo Nyirenda announced on Saturday, saying the reward was meant to motivate the players.

“We are all happy with our boys and the whole technical panel. For us to achieve our desired goals, we need to motivate the players,” said Nyirenda.

He also hailed team’s coach Ernest Mtawali and his backroom staff for defying the odds to win the crucial match away in Kishansa.
