Malawi university student arrested for stealing laptops

Malawi Polytechnic student, Henry Banda has been arrested for stealing two laptops worth K253, 000 belonging to fellow students, Police have confirmed.

Banda 23 years old and hails from Nampungo village T/A Juma in Mulanje is said to have stolen the laptops (Toshiba and Samsung) on Thursday December 13th, 2012 at Poly Village-students hostels- in Chichiri.

He is a first year Bachelor of Arts Accountancy student at the constituent college of the University of Malawi (Unima).

According to Southern Region Police assistant Public Relations Officer, Beatrice Mikuwa, Banda was arrested following investigations the law enforcers did and was found in possession of the stolen laptops.

“The matter was brought to our attention by Miss Modesta Bonjesi who owns one of the stolen laptops. She said the items were stolen from their room on the morning of Thursday when she was at school writing examinations. When coming back from school, she found her room’s door broken and two laptops missing. One of the laptops belongs to her friend. We have confiscated the laptops and will be used as evidence in court of law,” explained Mikuwa.

Mikuwa said Banda will appear in court soon to answer charges of house breaking and theft.
