Malawi VP Chilima speaks against handouts

Malawian Vice President Saulosi Chilima has called on Malawians to develop hard working spirit and refrain from depending on handouts to contribute to the country’s self economic dependency.

Chilima was speaking Sunday at Ntcheu Assemblies of God Church during a Big Sunday fundraising service which was organised by the church’s projects’ committee to raise funds for the completion of a new church currently under construction.

“As a church you have demonstrated that you are committed towards the development of your church. I am told that you managed to contribute over K14 million out of the budgeted K30 million for the building of the church, this is very commendable,” said Chilima.

He said God only gives to those who work hard as such he advised the church’s faithful to continue working hard and praying if they have to achieve their vision of having a magnificent church.

Update

Chilima then took advantage to update the nation on the current economic status of the country, saying government has no money and that Malawian should not be scared of the situation as most countries including donor countries in the world are also facing economic hardships.

“There is nothing you can achieve by pin pointing the government for the economic challenges we are going through, these problems have not left out any countries including donor countries,” he said.
On donors, the Vice President said donors attach conditions to their assistance and that such conditions are just scape goats, adding that the donors themselves are also in financial hardships.

“This is not to scare you, but this is the truth and what we should do as Malawians, is to work hard so that our country becomes economically independent,” he advised.

Independence

Earlier, President of Malawi Assemblies of God Church, Revered Dr. Edward Chitsonga commended the government for taking stein polices which would in the long run contribute to the country’s’ economic independence.

On the church’s political stand, Dr. Chitsonga said the church should not be mistaken for siding with any other political parties saying the church is an independent entity.

“The former president of the church, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is now Malawi Congress Party president and this does not mean that there is a link between the political party and Malawi Assemblies of God,” said Chitsonga.

Churches are one of the institutions in Malawi that put government officials under financial pressure. Lero fundraising apa, mawa apo – ala! Mukuganiza kuti angatenge ndalama za nthumba mwao ndi kumafupa amipingo? Amatenga za misonkho zomwezo. So, next time you here that a government official has been invited to a church fundraising event, organise a demonstration and block the road so they can’t get there! This is how change begins – from the grassroots! Wafuna ndalama akagwire ganyu ya chipalapala – mvula ikubwera!

Stop lying saulosi. Which donor countries are you talking about? Spain and Portugal or Italy? If you really are talking of our donors, (UK, US, Germany etc) then stop lying about their economies cause they are trillion times better than your below the par economy. Btw, aid budget has never been affected by cuts in the UK. In other ways, has been RING FENCED just like the NHS. Stop lying to the majority illeterate. Mr saulosi, you shuold know that. Imagine if say Nick Clegg or Joe Bidden stood up and uttered such nonsense, weeh. So are you trying to… Read more »
