Flames get decent Afcon 2017 draw

The draw took place at Confederation of African Football (CAF) headquarters in Cairo Egypt on Wednesday 8th April, 2015.

Afcon Executive committees also chose Gabon-the 2012 co-host as the host Nation for 2017 Afcon finals.

The 30th edition of the Afcon finals was played between 17th January and 8th February, 2015 in Equatorial Guinea.

Defending champions Cote d’Ivoire are in Group I alongside Sudan, Sierra Leone, Gabon. Malawi neighbours Zambia are in Group E and will face the improved side Congo, Kenya and Guinea Bissau.

The rainbow nation of South Africa is in Group M and is to challenge the fading former champions Cameroon, Gambia and Mauritania.

Winners of each group and two best second placed teams join hosts Gabon for Finals.

The tournament was initially scheduled to be hosted by Morocco who later demanded postponement of the event because of the Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa; subsequently Morocco was ruled out as a host country and replaced by Equatorial Guinea.

Ivory Coast won the tournament for their second Africa Cup of Nations title, defeating Ghana 9–8 in a penalty shoot-out after a goalless 90 minutes and 30 minutes of extra time.

The DR Congo came third and the hosts Equatorial Guinea fourth, while defending champions Nigeria did not qualify.

  6. Bibo says:

Always it is the same story, fair draw as echoed by both coaches and players but in the end no qualification.Unless robust, prolific, and physically capable players are roped into the team combined with good preparations and playing system,I don’t see Malawi qualifying with the same players at present. There is no competition in midfield which is the weakest link and the striking force needs a very potent partnership. The team, according to the last qualifying record, was very vulnerable when playing away and not convincing when playing at home and yet I see the same players dominating team selection. Why not cast the net wide and identity three or four untried players that could add value to the team?

If not careful, even Swaziland can cause problems.I don’t trust Malawi’s coaches capabilities. They haven’t proved to me that they can build the team from scratch and even the playing system is not a winning one- well let’s wait and see.

  21. PPP says:

This is the best draw we have ever had in years.

The formula is: We win all our home matches (9 points); we win in Swaziland, draw in Zimbabwe and lose in Guinea – we are technically through with 13 points.

Vuto la timu ya Flames ndi ili: Akawina game imodzi kapena ziwiri, amaluza ma game otsatirawo. Akachita mwayi ndi draw. Komanso ngati agoletsa zigoli ziwiri anzawo ali zero kapena one, timu yathu imatayilira kenaka nkuchinyitsa kumapeto. There is need for Psychological training for the flames players. The players need to learn from what big teams like Germany and Netherlands do. When they score some goals, they continue doing so instead of sitting back and relax or play a defensive game. As I have said before, the best defense in football is offence.

  28. opportunist says:

The coach is major problem in Malawi as select players based on hatred or not .Had it been Ng’onamo was the in charge of the squad was yielded something

  33. Juddaist says:

We have had chances like this before when we have been placed in the easiest of groups but we squander the opportunity by failing to prepare due to financial constraints premised from governments lack of political will. Our corporate world also fails us ‘with credit’ in that regard.

    1. Think Tank says:

problem with Malawi instead of aiming at winning all games,we wish other teams to tumble to give us a chance. The key word in our operations is “IF” Swaziland defeats Zimbabwe and we draw with Guinea, then we can qualify. Instead of going out flat to win from the word “go”
