Malawi women’s assistant ref to handle World Cup U20- Caf qualifier

Malawi’s Fifa assistant referee Bernadettar Kwimbira-Mzika has been assigned alongside Zambians, referee Gladys Lengwe, second assistant referee Mercy Zulu and Sarah Selemani, fourth official to handle a World Cup Under-20 Caf qualifier preliminary round between South Africa and Botswana next week.

Kwimbira-Mzika is one of Malawi’s three Fifa referees who passed the dreaded Fifa Physical Test in August.

The game will be played in South Africa during the weekend of 8-10 November while the preliminary round, started last weekend.

Fam General Secretary Suzgo Nyirenda applauded Caf for assigning the Malawian to handle the game.

“This is good for her because it will help to improve while exposing her to international games,” Nyirenda said.

The General Secretary also said it was an honour not only for her but also the country as a whole.

“This will also make our presence felt in the competition since we are not taking part in the competition as country.”

Kwimbira used to go alongside referee Grace Msiska and Happiness Mbandambanda before the disastrous results of the Fifa Physical Test.

Msiska and Mbandambanda failed the test.

Malawi did not enter the competition to be held in Canada in 2015 because of financial constraints which has seen the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) also out of Cosafa Under-20 to be held in Lesotho early this month (November).

The situation also forced Fam to overlook an invitation by Kenya to participate at this year’s Tusker East and Central Africa Senior Challenge Cup (Cecafa) scheduled for this month.
