Stay-away is illegal, says government

Malawi government has called the three-day mass stay away from work called by civil society groups as illegal and asked workers to get to work and students to be in classes.

The activists called for a stay-away from Wednesday, despite winning a court battle allowing them to hold vigils, saying they feared for their safety.

But government through Information Minister Patricia Kaliati urged people to go to working saying it will be a normal working day.

“Workers should report for their jobs while students should be in their classes because it’s a normal day,” Kaliati told Nyasa Timesin a telephone interview.

Mayaya: Summoned to police

She assured that security forces will be alert to provide security to everyone and deal with any perpetrators of violence.

Kaliati said the mass action is “illegal” as it may cost the economy in lost production.

Government deployed public address system vehicles in townships asking people to go to work.

The ruling DPP officials also reportedly gave out K5 million to vendors in the northern region not to stay-away from work.

The stay-away aims to force the government to make greater political and economic reforms following the July riots that shocked this normally tranquil country.

The riots were fuelled by anger over chronic fuel and foreign currency shortages, with activists blaming President Bingu wa Mutharika for failing to manage the agriculture-driven economy.

On Tuesday evening, Police in Lilongwe summoned spokesman of the activist, Billy Mayaya, soon after the civil society groups called for a stay-away mass action.

Let’s be frank. Malawians are selfish and self serving. And therefore cowardly and unreliable. Do not agree on anything with them. When the chips are down they will desert, leave you out in the cold. Reason they will always live under dictatorships forever

Why start something that you will not see to the finish line. Why start something if you are afraid you will be short dead? CSO is not the problem here. The nation of Malawi is the problem

Then this latest decision (the so called Plan B is simply a cowardly act by the CSO because of the mercurial citizenry, the undependable population. This renders vain the deaths of those people on 20 and 21 July. Shame on the nation. The CSO have not been fully supported by the population

Therefore Malawians will forever live in dictatorships!

  2. Hey BigMan why are you blaming Mayaya and his friends? I thought it was Bingu himself who said will smoke people out.
It’s him who is burning peoples stuff and he should stop blaming people for God is watching over him. It’s our prayer that God should help us getting out of this trouble.

  3. The system used by Nyasa Times is obvious to any casual reader. Its automated and is determined based on how other readers are ranking articles. If there are many readers clicking that they “dislike” the comment then eventually it gets hidden as long as there aren’t many people clicking the “like” it button. The comments get hidden not because Nyasa Times is biased, but the general consensus of readers of Nyasa Times is apparently against the current government.

Action speaks loud than words.dioloque has failed and it’s one way of wasting time.why choosing some people to represent Bingu on the diloqueg? How many times have PCDC met Bingu. All the mess{problems} malawi is going through have been caused by Bingu. 1.He chassed away British Ambossador{mugabe has personal problems with the West but he never chass any European representative frm Zim.today Zim is flowing in US$, SA Rand and yet Malawi is lacking these currencies}2.It’s Bingu who sided with Mukhito not to apogize to one lecture @ Chanco.3.He also told the UNIMA Council to fire 4 lecturers and make it strong that as long as he is presdent of Malawi those lecturers remain fired, thereby causing the once small issue very big.4.It’s Bingu who directed & authorised the RBM to lend foreign curency to his tyran friend R.Mugabe.5.He is the only one who introduced the “shoot to kill idea & the i will smoke out” we can see the results.6.Bingu, G.Chaponda & their irisponsible MPs introduced the anti democracy laws eg. sect46, the injuctions law etc.7. they brought the 0DB thereby imposing heavy taxes on local poor man, and yet they caused all the mess no burden on themselves.8.Bingu introduced something new to Malawians that is paying his wife for charity work, [no where in the world a president wife got gvt pay.]9.Bingu’s worth doesn’t need some to explain, he can explain himself,& i repeat Bingu’s worth doesn’t need a mediator! 4 what?10.we are paying 6o% of our money to the gvt but when sick no drugs in gvt hospitals, only to be told to buy from pvt pharmacies which are very expensive.then u ask urself why am i more taxed? All the comdties have gone up almost 3 times. Taxi fares gone up and seating in overloaded manner.while those we voted power akuti zinthu zilibwino bwana dzuwa latiwalira, talemera{malawi is rich} we can change the flag bwana.what 4?they tell us we have enough drugs @ the CM Stores but those leaders fail sick the fly to SA, why not treated here? What’s wrong here? All other issues on the 20th July 2011 can not b solved without Bingu on that table of discussion. He is the causer of all the problems Malawi is facing today and he is the only one who hold the solutions to the mess that mother Malawi is in.choosing loyal ministers wont solve the problems but have ministers who want to speak out thier views to the prsdent and the bigman must learn to listen from those with diffent views. Mr Prsdent learn to respect those with dfrnt views & you will be respected. CSOs are reprenting all Malawians not any region, or any tribe. Be a leader not a ruler.{leaders are elected while rulers are impossed} party policts leave to Z.Ng’oma.you are a state prsdnt not part 1.Being state prsdnt You are a father to all. The fatherless, widowers, the partyless, the opposition needs shelter, comfort and love from you.gud night .
