Mutharika: I will continue with the development

Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika says Malawians should appreciate that he has developed the country since he took over power in 2004 and said he was poised to continue with the development agenda.

Mutharika was speaking on Monday upon his arrival at Kamuzu International Airport in the capital Lilongwe from Chinese resort city of Macau.

“I want to assure you that I still remain resolved to develop this country. This country is rich in minerals and other natural resources that we can tap in them,” said Mutharika.

“As you are aware, when I took over the mantle as President, people were dying from hunger and hunger-related illnesses. Ndathetsa njala (I have eradicated hunger). At the time like this, people should have been lining up at ADMARC for scarce maize,” said the Malawi leader.

HIV/Aids

Mutharika also prides himself for reducing HIV/Aids related deaths in Malawi because his government has been giving out free antiretroviral drugs to prolong lives of Aids suffers.

“I have also dealt with HIV/AIDS. Deaths caused by HIV/AIDS have been drastically reduced,” Mutharika said.

“Do the opposition leaders sit down and ask themselves what happened that deaths have been reduced,” he said.

Infrastructure

President Mutharika also pointed out that there have been great strides in the infrastructure development.

“I have also improved the road network; the rail network, Mponel-Ntchisi, Kamphata-Nkhoma, people were dying,” he said.

“You opposition leaders, you do not see this?”

Mutharika also disclosed that he will be launching the much awaited Karonga-Chitipa road in the northern region.

“What about Karonga-Chitipa road, others just paid lip service; we’re doing it and next year, we are officially opening,” said the Malawi leader.

“What about new Parliament; the first of its kind in the SADC region; What about the Malawi University of Science and Technology.”

He also said government has been building schools blocks and that “pupils no longer are learning under trees.”

Women and Children

Malawi leader whose wife is special ambassador of Safe motherhood said his administration has managed to reduce maternal mortality rate.

He said World Health Organisation and other multilateral agencies have attested to this.

Mutharika also said he has promoted women in the country giving them good positions and uplifting women doing business, saying “I want these to continue.”

Malawians are discontented with the Mutharika administration as currently the country is facing the worst economic crisis with fuel and dollar shortages. There has also been price increases on commodities.

  7. What a bad joke!! Malawi? Developed? Don’t make me laugh ….. the roads, railway, electricity supply are all in a much worse state than they were in 1994. Children may, possibly, no longer be learning ‘underv trees’, but some of the so-called class rooms are in a truly terrible condition. Who has bought the anti -retrovirals that Bingu gives away so freely? Who bought the fertilizer to help ensure food security? And just because there is food available doesn’t mean that people can afford to buy it!
