Defiant Malawian leader Bingu wa Mutharika has maintained his stand that the year 2011 was economically successful and described his critics who think to the contrary as having sick minds.

Taking advantage of the launch of the 2011-2012 National Tree Plating Season which he officiated at Sekwele Primary School  in Zomba on Wednesday, Mutharika said contrary to what his opponents have been preaching to the world against the economic situation the year 2011 went on smoothly with a lot of successful developments taking place.

Mutharika: 2011 wasn't a worst year

“I want to disagree with those who are claiming that 2011 was the worst year. 2011 went on very well, it was economically successful and even the Reserve Bank of Malawi confirmed by saying its reserves were not different from those of 2010.

“So if you say 2011 was a bad year, it was bad in your heads,” stated Mutharika in his usual polluted language.

The 78-year-old president wondered whether fuel and forex shortage were the only highlights of the year when in actual fact the country witnessed massive development during the year.

He added: “This year let us all work hard, things will be OK, we will have fuel, we will have forex and enough food.”

Mutharika warned a crackdown against critics in 2012.

“ Those of you who don’t want development, Mumvam’bebe  (you feel the heat)” said the President who is on record threatening to “smoke-out” activists.

The President’s threats received ululations and cheers from his supporters.

An observer said the president’s assertions just show how heartless he is because the picture is clear and every sensible person living in Malawi knows what type of the year 2011 was socially and economically.

A number of organisations both local and international, politicians and civil society leaders have all described the calendar year 2011 as worst socially and economically.

If 2011 was succesful as claimed by Bingu, why asking the opposition to assist him?

Let him leave these problems unattended till 2014 and see the tsunami that is waiting for him at the pools!
