President Bingu wa Mutharika has always boasted as a person who respects traditional leaders but on Wednesday the Malawi leader barked at the chiefs threatening to strip them off of their chieftaincies.
The president attacked the chiefs in Zomba when he launched the 2011-2012 National Tree Plating Season at Jali in the area of TA Mwambo.
Mutharika accused the traditional leaders of engaging in corrupt acts which include selling coupons for subsidize farm inputs and fertilizers at higher prices not recommended by government.
“I have your names… I have the powers to remove any chief who engages in that and one day when I am angry do not say I am a bad leader,” he said.
“But if that is true then it is bad because you are part of the system [government] and you are supposed to assist government in developing this country, and as chiefs you are supposed to lead by example,” said Mutharika.
Since taking over government in 2004, Mutharika has always bragged of respecting chiefs but his comments against them have left a lot to be desired.
Over the past two weeks, he elevated two chiefs TA Tsabango of Lilongwe and TA Makwangwala of Ntcheu to senior chief respectively.
There are also reports that he will be elevating another TA in the Northern Region to senior chief during the coming few weeks.

Only Dausi has answered my call for a programme of action against this failed President
It would appear the rest of commentators here are only intersted in word expressions but afraid of expression by action. How on earth then do you hope to effect the desired necessary change for our country?
The goal for the demonstrations and protets this time around must be clear – “Change of Government”
Universities weed a student who fails the crucial test. That’s what has happened in Malawi. – Bingu has failed as President – the crucial test of leadership. Therefore we the citizens must weed him. He is a disaster in similar manner as the earthquake. For Bingu has turned our country into ruins – in politics, economy and infrastructures. Please do not cite some constructions like the Parliament as development. That is business as usual for Presidents. A President has to do far much more to be counted above the ordinary mortals – like turning the fledgling economy round, tarmacing the entire road network, upgrading education
We Malawians need to up our standards by which we measure performance of our Presidents and all other elected officials.
In summary as Bingu has destroyed the economy, politics and the social orde in our country he must be forced to step down. We know Bingu would not step down willingly. We the people therefore must force him out

ReplyGalu akagwidwa ndi chiwewe it is already very late to think of vaccination as a remedy. Several dogs in our country are rabid and we just have to watch out. Think of this, one minute the Fuhurer barks that Malawians are chickens just because they have demanded explanation of why the economy tanked, shortage of forex and why some seem to benefit heavily from this crooked adminstration.
Malawians are very polite and hard working people and do not deserve insult from m’chona ngati uyu. He is the real chicken because during his hiding from Kamuzu he even changed his name to WaMutharika. What more evidence of being achicken does one need. Let’s this bury as soon as possible. Ameneyu akumwa bibida too much. He thinks having a PhD qualifies him to be the most intelligent Malawian. His Phd stands for Permanent head damage.

ReplyHow can he say the chiefs should give good examples? Has he Bingu given a good example? Has his cabinets ministers and MPs given examples. Kaliati was buying the same coupons on low prices. By the way why having so many chiefs? I never saw this during Kamuzu Banda. to days Malawi a chief is not born as a chief but put or pointed for some reasons. These is Bingu´s or DDPs political tacktic. Now it is approaching 2014 so chiefs are needed. But Malawians dont buy to the chiefs after all they know they are government tools. They are bought and just corrupted as the government. If Bingu had trained his cabinets and MPs then they chiefs also could be good or not corrupted. Why can he Bingu tell his members in Cabinets, MPs and his wife to help develping by not misusing tax payers money? Telling chiefs that they are corrupted and leaving the big corrupted is also showing how Bingu has failled to deal with the economy. We are punished by the donors for the second time because of governance and corruption. This is not the chiefs fault. But Bingu. Building unneccesary things which have no use and not a priority to the nation or people. Would a man buy a car when his children are dying of hunger? Come on Malawians. this country dont need high scrapers like America or Europe. We arre under developled nation. Why do we need to run to the European standard when we have no necessary things. The Westerners did not start with tal building or luxious things. They build themselves first. I grew up in Europe and now am 60 years, I have seen how Europe has charged and that is social development. When my Europeans friends ask me why Africa is not developing they dont mean why dont you have five star hotels they mean why people are still poor? To be called poor is when the majority of people have no work to earn a living. How many millions of Malawians who work? I think it is only one million of Malawians are working that is including house workers. Go to Zambia, Tanzania and even Mozambique you find that the number of workers is large than Malawqia. Now Mr president what has you dont to develope the lives of Malawians? You talked about it in your campaign 2009. Do Bingu think we shall remember him for building five star hotel and Presidential vilas? Where in the world thereare presidential vilas? May be it is another trick it is his villas. If this is true that the houses he is building are presidential vilas then I am sorry they will be vacant most of the time and it will be a worst of resources in this poor nation.
