Villagers in Malawi’s border district of Mchinji have killed in an uncannily manner a senior citizen and one of their own after they allegedly caught him stealing maize.
Almost certainly, the deceased, 65-year-old Tasiyano Agripa, met his fate due to food deficit. The old man died the most heartrending way after he was stoned until he breathed his last by his fellow villagers.
The incident happened around 02.00am on Thursday at Siwelera Village, in the area of TA Simphasi in the district, according to police.
Mchinji Police Spokesperson, Moses Nyirenda, said the suspected elderly thief met his fate while in a granary (a storeroom for maize) of Lucia Miti.
Nyirenda said Miti heard a strange sound in her granary and not knowing what it was because of darkness, she immediately alerted fellow villagers to help her deal with the “unknown creature”.
“The villagers responded swiftly and started throwing into the granary every object around them such as stones and metal bars until a few minutes later when they could hear nothing inside,” explained the police PRO.
Upon taking a look inside the granary, the villagers were shocked to see one of their senior villagers lying dead.
Meanwhile, police have arrested the owner of the granary and two of her relations to answer charges of murder.
Hunger is becoming increasingly common in Malawi now.
Robber kill
In another incident, thugs on Wednesday hacked to death a 48-year-old guard and went away with assorted items belonging to a private school in Blantyre.
Blantyre Police Assistant Police Spokesperson Lameck Thembachako said the deceased, Yohane Phiri, was killed while on duty at Michiru View Private School where he was working as a guard.
Thembachako explained that after arriving at the school the robbers captured the late Phiri, tied him up before hacking him on the forehead with a panga knife.
They then broke into the offices where they stole cash amounting to K318 000, three desktop computers, a Panasonic radio, DVD player, digital camera and 15 mobile phone handsets which belonged to students.
“The guard was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital but he died before receiving any treatment,” said the police spokesperson adding that so far no arrests have been made.
The late Phiri came from Kankhwani village, Traditional Authority Kachindamoto in Dedza district.

Replystop wasting time and tax payers money and free these ppo. And how in God’s name would you narrow down an entire village action down to two ppo; besides, I echo earlier blog on the issue, the victim should in the least have let the villagers know it was him and that he meant no harm to anyone!
the killing is most unfortunate. village headmen and chiefs should take a more pro-active role in identifying the extent of poverty amongst their ppo and try and get the government to offer support and aid. Only God knows what state of helplessness a 65 year old must have felt to even contemplate such action. Indeed, we should question our role as neighbours, as well. How come we cannot communicate and interact with our neighbours that they should resort to stealing rather than ask, politely. And were they to ask, would we have indeed helped or pour more scorn on them.
the Malawi society is becoming alarmingly self-destructing and devoid of moral value.

ReplyThere is no excuse to killing, particularly as Malawaians are supposed to be god-fearing people.
Govement is starving its population, police is killing demonstrators, thugs are killing guards, villagers are killing old people, men are killing children…
Where are the friendly people of the warm heart of Africa gone?

ReplyPlease. Malawi Police Service, is this a murder case? So what charges will Mukhito and Bingu answer? A person was found in a granary stealing or whatsoever mission he was up to, but when the villagers started throwing stones and objects, it was his duty to safe guard himself by raising alarm that he was one of them. He has died of his own negligence and not the owner of the granary.
Let the police not full the villagers, because they have no say. who has brought all this thing? Njala Bingu. A Peter Wa Mutharika adabwera nchiani ku Malawi and now akupezeka sponsoring people nanga uyu Bingu adachoka ku Lusaka ku COMESA adali ndi chiyani pano akutumbwa. Amangeni enawo amene akupha miyoyo ya A Malawi not innocent citizens. Now A police chenjezo ndilakuti mumakhala mu marenti mu ma location and you are within the society. You need to weigh things because at the end of the day you will seize to exist like MYP’S.
