Business was temporarily suspended this morning in the northern City of Mzuzu with shops closed as irate vendors  went berserk undressing women whom they felt was indecently dressing.

The development come barely a day after vendors in Lilongwe stripped naked women who put on tight trousers, miniskirts and leggings.

Just like in Lilongwe the Mzuzu vendors were targeting women who wore leggings, miniskirts and body-revealing trousers.

This is freedom of 'un'dressing, of course this picture is not from Mzuzu

The incident started  around 9 o’clock in the morning after Mzuzu vendors learnt through newspapers stories that vendors in Lilongwe were yesterday undressing women.

At Katoto filling station one woman who wanted to board a Minibus to Luwinga was undressed by vendors in broad day right.

Another woman met her fate near St John of God before as she was entering the city centre.

One Indian national was undressed in the heart of city centre near Mzuzu Shopping centre and was rescued by police.

The vendor had taken control of the city as they were checking each and every minibus which was passing through the road to the bus depots looking for a woman or girl wearing a trouser or min skirt.

However, the situation returned to normalcy in the afternoon after the police patrolled the city.

Mzuzu police spokesperson Edward Longwe said no arrest has so far been made like in Lilongwe where police arrested about 16 vendors in connection to the incidents.

Meanwhile women activists in the country are planning to hold protests this Friday in Blantyre against the action by the vendors.

Executive Director of Women and Law in Southern Africa, Seode White say the activities during the event will include prayers and speeches.

It is also reported that some women are planning to parade naked in the streets.

Condemning the brutal act, main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokeswoman Nancy Tembo said the act was violence against women and should not be condemned in a democratic Malawi where there is freedom of dressing.

“Police women wear trousers, mechanic women wear trousers, why do we have to live in fear.” Tembo said.

UDF Presidential aspirant Atupele Muluzi said there was no justification to “this dsgusting act, women of whatever age are all our mothers and need to be respected.”

  2. I am sorry Willard, but what you said is one of the most idiotic staements. It is a fact of life that every creature puts on some effort in attracting the opposite sex and humans have progressed beyond the rawness of open displays and giving off scent! A short skirt, a little revealation is all part of that. There is a fundamental difference between a woman in short skirt standing on a street corner eyeing up motorists for business and a girl in a short skirt going about life. Aids is borne out of ignorance, carelessness and promiscuity not a emancipation failure of men such as you, that a woman can revel in her sexuality and dress sexily without necessarily begging for it!
