Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) MP for Blantyre City South, Moses Kunkuyu, has blasted the party’s old guards of being “too
timid” to face President Bingu wa Mutharika and tell him the truth.
Speaking in Zodiac radio’s Tiuzeni Zoona program on Sunday, the youthful lawmaker said this is why he and other MPs in the DPP have formed the Hope Alliance pressure group.
“There is a wall in DPP constructed by senior Ministers and politicians in the party. It is hard to reach the President with concerns from our constituents. As Hope Alliance we want to break the wall and have the party open up,” challenged Kunkuyu.
“We feel our leader is poorly advised. We feel some people surrounding the President are blocking the way for those who want to tell him
the truth. As MPs, we bring to the President issues from the constituents but there is never feedback. We want to improve the communication channel,” said Kunkuyu.
Asked if he was not afraid that he will be expelled alongside his fellow members that have formed the group, Kunkuyu told the radio that he is resigned to his fate in order to save democracy.
“In this democracy why fire people for exercising their freedoms. The party must realize that it is owned by people,” said Kunkuyu.
Kunkuyu is spokesperson for the group, which also has as Peter Nowa (Mulanje Pasani Constituency), Jeffrey Ntelemuka (Blantyre City
South East) and MP for Blantyre West, Wells Gamah.
He said the ‘rebel group’ want to bring hope to Malawians by ensuring that the party observes the rule of law, good governance, democracy
and that Malawians are able to get basic needs.
The formation of the Hope Alliance comes a few weeks after other DPP MPs met and expressed concern over the conduct of the President’s
brother, Peter Mutharika, who they accused of not engaging them and of conducting himself as if he were already an elected president.
Peter Mutharika was handpicked by his brother to be DPP residential candidate in 2014 elections and the party members have been
bulldozed to rubber stamp his nomination.
