One of the country’s entertainment companies, Nde’feyo Entertainment has announced that it will soon start a series of stand-up comedy.

The announcement was made through a media statement made available to Nyasa Times .

According to the company the series is being introduced to turn comics in Malawi a profession.

“We have a vision to provide the best relaxed, enjoyable moments for the people [and] comedy is one avenue of providing these moments,” says company co-director Ken Limwamwe in the statement.

He adds: “As Malawians are best known for their friendliness and good sense of humour, it [stand-up comedy] won’t be a totally new concept.”

“There are already stand-up comedians out there. All they need is an audience and opportunity. It’s Nde’feyo’s job to provide a platform for the comedians,” observes Limwame.

According to Nde’feyo Entertainment, they have already been in touch with a couple of humourous Malawians that can make good stand-up comedians and soon the company will start conducting auditions for those willing to participate in the series.

“Anyone who thinks can make people laugh is free to come for auditions and for those who can manage, video demos will suffice,” says Limwame, who further discloses that “the series will eventually be packaged in a DVD which will be sold.”

Apart from a couple of renowned dramatists, who most of them perform in pairs, Malawi has one known professional stand-up comedian Daliso Chaponda who is based in the UK.

Chaponda, who first performed in Malawi last year and is currently in the country on a tour with his new ‘Antisocial Commentator’ production, recently told Nyasa Times in an interview that Malawians clearly have an appetite for stand-up comedy, saying “What is needed is the artists.”

Nde’feyo Entertainment is better known for managing artists and music publishing. Its vision is to become a leading provider of entertainment in Malawi and Africa, with a mission to create happiness through its portfolio of brands and services.
