Uladi calls on Bingu to respect constitution on MEC

Maravi People’s Party (MPP) president Uladi Mussa has urged President Bingu wa Mutharika to respect the Malawi Constitution and demonstrate good governance principles by involving all stakeholders in the appointment of new Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) commissioners.

The  contracts of five Mec commissioners — Ron Nkomba, Brown Chimphamba, Georgina Chikoko, Mary Manyusa and Dick Mzumara — expired last week, leaving Mec chairperson Anastanzia Msosa as the only commissioner.

Commissioner Oliver Mwenifumbo died last year, while Jean Nankwenya was sent on a diplomatic mission in the Unites States of America.

Justice Msosa’s term will expire later this year.

“The Presidet should appoint impartial and representative commissioners,” said   the sole representative of MPP in parliament.

The presidential spokesperson Hetherwick Ntaba has assured that the appointing authority  will follow the law in making such appointments.

“It’s not a question of what a particular individual wants. It’s about what the laws say,” Ntaba told Daily Times.

“The president follows the laws. Previously, whatever the law says was followed and that will also be the case, if new commissioners are to be appointed,” Ntaba said.

Malawi is expected to hold presidential, parliamentary and local government elections together in 2014.
