Former legislator for Mchinji South West George Zulu on Friday announced his defection to the Peoples Party (PP) with over 30 constituency committee members.
Zulu announced the defection in Lilongwe at function where Vice President Joyce Banda who is also PP interim leader interacted with over 100 PP leaders drawn from all the districts in the central region.
In his speech, Zulu said he decided to join PP because of the visionary leadership in the party and that their is no democracy in MCP.
Zulu said he made the decision after wide consultations with people in his constituency and family members who assured him that PP is poised form the next government.
In her welcome remarks, Banda said PP has an open door policy and was hopeful that Zulu will help in the growth of the party especially in Mchinji.
She thanked Zulu for joining PP with his constituency committee members, saying this shows he consulted widely.
Banda welcoming
Earlier, the Vice President urged Peoples Party (PP) leaders in central region to work hard and help strengthen the party at grassroot level in readiness for 2014 general elections.
She said leaders at national executive committe, regional, district, constituency down to branch level are crucial for the funtioning and growth of the party.
“I called this meeting to hear how the party is doing in your areas but also to encourage you to work hard becuase PP is ready to form government in 2014,” she said.
Banda urged the leaders to promote and build the party in their areas by forming branch, area and constituency committees where they do not exist.
“Already within six months since our registration we have over 2 million registered members. But this is not enough, PP has an open door policy and we need more people to join the party in your areas,” she said.
She discrouged the leaders from using their positions for selfish means but to promote the party by being ambassors of PP in their areas so that many people are attracted to PP.
Youth role
One of the speakers at the function a Mr Binuli, Director of Youth for the Central Region, thanked the Veep for putting the youth in the fore front in all party activities.
He said unlike in other parties where the youth are used for violence, in PP the youth play productive roles like help in building the party and attracting new members to join the party.
“This is so because madam Vice President your track record in promoting and assisting the youth is well known. You have been doing this for many years before you even became Vice Preident and you still have the youth at your heart,” Binuli said.
Several top PP leaders attended the fucntion, including Vice Predident Khumbo Kachali and Provincial Chairman for Central Region Kizito Ngwembe.

ReplyCongratulations Zulu for the wise decision to get back into active politics and joining PP to bring back development initiatives you started in the constituency when you were MP. – osati tikuona panozi. MCP with Tembo clinging to presidency is a waste of time.

ReplyZulu is fabricating a bare-faced lie when he claims that he has the support of his constituency. Walowa PP iyeyo ndi banja lake. And his joining PP is of no consequence – really. You see, chisankho cha 2014 sichidzakhala ngati 2009. People will vote along regional/tribal lines having seen and experienced the excesses of uyu, uyu, uyu…the Father of Chickens.
The Centre alone can carry through the MCP. It has ever happened before when UDF snatched the victory from Gwanda through rigging. Do not bury your heads in the sand. MCP is well poised to carry the day come 2014
