United Democratic Front (UDF) youthful presidential hopeful, Atupele Muluzi, was on Sunday ambushed as his convoy was attacked by stone-throwing ruling DPP thugs while travelling in the rural southern tea-growing districts of Thyolo and Mulanje.
Atupele, son of former president Bakili Muluzi, was in the Lhomwe belt a stronghold of DPP, to conduct whistle-stop political meetings.
His convoy was ambushed when the road was barricaded with stones and trees just after Bvumbe Trading Centre in Thyolo.
Police were unhelpful and failed to arrest or charge any of the perpetrators over 30 young men believed to be DPP Cadets. They were led by DPP terror-in-chief Lewis Ngalande.
The regime thugs attacked the UDF officials who accompanied Atupele and one of his bodyguard was seriously hurt . He was rushed to a hospital where he is battling for his life.
Atupele remained calm after the incident.
“This is the type of politics we need to change,” he told Nyasa Times.
The parliamentarian said the attack will inspire him to advance his agenda for change.
“This incident will give me more energy to fight for change,” he said.
“The road will never be smooth. It was not smooth during the dawn of democracy but there were people who sacrificed and I am ready to be a sacrifice than a butcher,” he added.
The young Atupele, 33, is considered a major political threat to DPP presidential candidate Peter Mutharika who is in his late 70′s.
