Amidst growing squabbles in his ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Nyasa Times has been tipped by top government sources that President Bingu wa Mutharika is contemplating to reshuffle his cabinet.
Sources confided in Nyasa Times the honey moon for the six-month old cabinet is over as Mutharika continues with his reforms within the party ahead of the 2014 presidential and parliamentary polls, expected to be the toughest ever.
Already the 78-year-old president has made some surprising dismissals and appointments over the last few months which include firing of the ruling party Regional Governor for the South (Noel Masangwi), director general of the National Intelligence Service (Clement Kapalamula) and his Aide De Camp (ADC) Desmond Chawanda.
He recently also replaced the Malawi Army Chief General Marko Chiziko with Brigadier General Henry Odillo.
“The president is not happy with a number of his cabinet ministers who he feels have not assisted the party and he has already come up with a new list which is just waiting for the Office of the President and Cabinet [OPC] to make an announcement once he gives it a go ahead,” said the source.
Our source said among the target ministers who have failed to rise up include Ephraim Mganda Chiume (Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs) and deputies Nicholas Dausi (in the Office of President Cabinet) and Otria Moyo Jere of Education responsible for Higher Education.
The source also said Mutharika was annoyed with the conduct of his young brother, Peter, heir to the throne and Minister of Foreign Affairs but cannot remove him as 2014 presidential candidate for the DPP.
State House Spokesperson, Albert Mungomo, was not available for comment when contacted on Friday. Mungomo is always coy to grant interview, preffering presidential spokesma Hetherwick Ntaba to do the talking.
The impending reshuffle comes amidst growing reports of things falling apart in the party with the emergence of the Hope Alliance, a faction of sitting DPP Parliamentarians led by Blantyre City South Moses Kunkuyu who claim their mission is to re-strategize for the party’s victory in 2014.
It is, however, not clear whether the said reshuffle will be executed as the president is away to an African Union (AU) summit in Ethiopia.
Should Mutharika indeed reshuffle the cabinet, it will be his “shortest lived” cabinet after only being appointed six months ago, on 6th September 2011 where a number of senior ministers like Ken Kandodo, Etta Banda, Prof David Mphande and Grain Malunga while reengaging former fired ministers Patricia Kaliati, Dr Ken Lipenga, Dr Goodal Gondwe and Henry Mussa.
Mutharika fired all 40plus members of his cabinet and run the country alone for about two weeks before dropping about 18 in his lean cabinet which Malawians had been crying for.

I agree with Mr’s comment except point number 8 because one region was abusing the education system. Why is it that only one region is crying foul while the two regions are quite? Can’t you sense something there. If you are old enough this system was not a recent system. This administration just revamped it after seeing that there was only one language in the corridors of the University colleges. This time at least you see even those from the remotes poor families are there at colleges despite the problems the University has. If Mr was honest enough the best we can do as Malawians is to join hands to build more hostels and classrooms so that more of our children access the tertiary education other than wasting time castigating one another due to this so called Quota system.
If you have two bananas but you have six children what do you do? I hope if you are a good parent you share one banana for three children so that each can have a taste. What the government did in the education system was just that. It is quite unfortunate that some people just chose to understand it wrongly for their benefits. Such People need to be cursed because they don’t love others but they only love themselves.

ReplyThe Cabinet is ok. This is what needs to change:
*Power should be decentralised
* The ‘lende nkukankhana’ system of politics should terminate. We should base our policies on sound principles.Reward achievements and encourage healthy competition.
*No more regionalism. It divides a country!
*Revamp education so that some basic values be taught in schools: Discipline, ‘Mwambo’, Accountability, Management. Weed out out under performing private schools, they are producing riff raff!.
*Inclusiveness; the concept of you are what you are because of me and I am what I am because of you; we need each other.
*More transparency, the poor Malawian should be the recepient of the Governments protection through good policies in all sectors.
* Above all Follow protocol, politics should be about progressing Malawi, not about people or personlities. Find a way of stopping the chaos it’s wasting valuable time.
* Malawians could do with changing their mind set too! we need to get more cosntructive, less destructive, more broad minded, a country does not get developed by a president alone everybody is responsible, everybody can serve! Change all round please!
Good luck

ReplyDoes DPP want to win in 2014? If YES, then let them do the following: 1.Remove Peter from candindacy,
2.Organize a convention to elect a Presidential candidate.
3.Make sure that people at convention vote for the one they want to be president by using a secret ballot so that delegates vote without fear or favour.
4.Stop all cadets from terrorising DPP critics.
5.Reinforce UNITY among Malawians, i.e. adopt the “ONE MALAWI ONE NATION”. Stop doing things based on regionalism, but do it as to MALAWIANS.
6.Reverse all repressive laws that are there only to put Malawians under heavy yoke.
7.Public offices appointments to be done on merit.
8.Abolish Quota system and use merit for University Selection and Secondary School selection,so that everybody gets what they deserve,i.e.”NO SWEAT NO GAIN”.
I am 100% SURE that these 8 points will bring victory to DPP in 2014 elections.

ReplyReshufling the cabinet is not the solution. The problem is with Bingu himself. The rest like ministers just help him to run the country. He is the one to be reshuffled!!
