MBC boss Malopa accused of sexual harassment

Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Director General Bright Malopa has found himself in hot soup when a female employee stormed out of his office sobbing after allegedly being sexually harassed , Nyasa Times understands.
The incident happened last Friday in Malopa’s office at the state broadcaster’s headquarters in the commercial city Blantyre.
According to information gathered by Nyasa Times, the MBC boss is reported to have summoned the young lady, Mayamiko Kang’oma to his office to discuss business matters.
Malopa grabs headline in scandal sheet
Kang’oma is an MBC staff working in the broadcaster’s development arm, the Development Broadcasting Unit (DBU).
However, it was in the process of ‘discussing business matters’ that the young lady noticed that something was amiss when Malopa started making sexual advances on her promising a lot of favours including promotions and foreign trips.
The MBC head is alleged to have started caressing the young lady and attempted to kiss her.
Noticing that she was in danger, Kang’oma stormed out of Malopa’s office crying, a development that alerted fellow employees in the collidors of the giant building commonly referred to by occupants as Broadcasting House (BH).
Kang’oma is then reported to have narrated the whole episode to fellow workers including our informant on how Malopa sexually molested her in his office.
However, fearing for her job, Kang’oma is reported to have warned colleagues not to reveal to anyone about the incident.
Meanwhile, the story started spreading like wild fire at BH a development that forced Malopa to engage a countering strategy.
He is reported to have gone to Blantyre Police station where he complained against the girl for defamation.
Malopa is also reported to have engaged his lawyers to gag the Malawi local media from publishing and broadcasting the story of his sexual harassment.
Interestingly, the girl has also complained to Police against Malopa and according to our Police sources, Kang’oma has been summoned to appear before the law enforcers for her side of the story.
When contacted for comment on her Airtel mobile (number withheld) Kang’oma declined to comment on the incident.
In the interim Malopa has talked to the head of the DBU, Emmanuel Thuwala to try and reason with his junior so that she denies the story when the media approaches her.
Thuwala was promoted into this position as manager of DBU by Malopa during the MBC merger exercise last year.
In a related development, Malopa has submitted to Police a list of names of people that he feels are behind the spreading of this story to the public.
Featuring highly amongst the names are those that fought against the merger of MBC last year.
The MBC director general has vowed to attack anybody who goes against him. He prides himself as a close relative to President Bingu wa Mutharika and that anybody who dares him, may face the wrath of the Malawi leader.
When this reporter phoned MBC Thursday morning to speak with Malopa, his secretary said he had decline to talk to Nyasa Times.

ReplySome comments are too childshish and evil. What most of us know, the girl acted unwisely (if she really did like what is reported here). She has to apologise for being not orderly (if it really happened which I doubt 100%). Malaopa, besides personal weaknesses which I am not aware of, is an intelligent young man with vision and guts.
Bright, don’t worry. There will be many castigating you. Please never retariate. You have a big institution to focus on. Just leave this unfaithful girl. Never attempt to suck her from job. She wants to start making noise through some noise makers (we all know who make nise in Malawi).
Malawians are well informed. They are able to differentiate lies from truth. We have already seen the girl is lying. May the police refer the issue to the MBC Management first before taking it to court unless the girl insists. Otherwise spending time at the court because of this baseless issue is a loss of time and resources.

ReplySDA Church has nothing to do with Bright Malopas issue…why dragging SDA Church into this?I didnt know that Mayamiko can sink so low to lie to the nation about her self claimed and cooked story of Bright Malopa.Mayamiko knew in advance that she had a meeting with Bright after being fed with false and damaging information to tarnish the image of Malopa by one other senior lady officer at the MBC with another DPP member who are planning the downfall of Malopa.I am not surprised with Mayamikos false story that she was sexually abused by Bright.Mayamiko knows the truth about the whole pre-arranged meeting to destroy the young clever Malopa…. is it mission accomplished? Mayamiko,its time u have to come in the open and say the truth…u shud be ashamed of urself!And i dont know why her parents have advised her not to report for duties while she wants to paid by the MBC for work not done?this is not fair Mayamiko?is it stress…lets hope ur GP is aware of ur situation and u have strong evidence to back urself…politics is really a dirty game!
