Two women in Mzimba risk suffering from Cervical Cancer following the District Hospital’s failure to transport them to Mzuzu Central Hospital for treatment because of budgetary constraints, Nyasa Times has leant.

The women were diagnosed three months ago with the Human Papiloma Virus that causes Cervical Cancer and are supposed to receive cryotherapy.

Cryotherapy is a procedure that prevents the Human Papiloma virus from progressing into Cervical Cancer.

The two women are Tusayire Mwalwambire, 24, who lives at Mzimba Boma and Lifness Jana who stays at Jenda Trading Centre in the district have since been appealing for well wishers to offer them assistance.

District Cervical Cancer Coordinator Veronica Ngulube told Nyasa Times that efforts to have the duo go to Mzuzu for cryotherapy have proved futile.

She said the district hospital does not have the cryotherapy machine as such patients in need of such treatment are referred to Mzuzu.

A cryotherapy machine costs about K1 million, according to Ngulube.

Ngulube said in the absence of the machine means Health Workers do visual inspection using Acetic Acid in screening the Human Papiloma virus.

Ngulube said cervical cancer is treatable especially when diagnosed early.

The Coordinator bemoaned lack of awareness of the disease especially in rural areas; a development she said has seen many women dying due to lack of early diagnosis and treatment.

“People need to be encouraged to go to health facilities for screening because early diagnosis helps,” she said.

You risk exposing your mediocre knowledge on this topic by showing us that you have mere technical knowledge on HPV and Cervical Cancer.

Thus you are giving credit to an author who knows not even an iota of info on the terms he has aligned, and is bleaching patients’ rights (confidentiality) by exposing their names in their being HPV carriers…..
At the same time you are trying to discredit Mercy who has just rightly highlihted 3 undisputable facts !

“acetic acid is used for magnificaton”
    …..what crap !

  3. Nyasatimes, learn to write correct information on this site because many people read your postings. Do not post articles you havent fully researched on, it’s misleading. When cervical smear done on woman comes back as positive, they do another test known as colposcopy

And cryotherapy is a total deferrent procedure.
http://www.skincancercollege.com/Default.aspx?tabid=169, nothing to do with cervix or cervical cancer.

  5. The HP virus like many viruses have got negative imapact on cell genome integrity, they alter DNA and empower the cell to multiply uncontrollable… the birth of cancer. Those women are at high risk of developing cancer of the cervix because i understand they have a higher load of the virus…it is worth noting that the HP virus is prevalent among the sexually active group….

  6. Why not ask the DHO about the facts when writing the article. Get professional views when writing such articles rather than causing unnecessary public panic when u r not sure what u r talking about. Thats demotivating health workers who r working hard with constrained resources. Blame Bingu.
