The Malawi Economic Justice Network (MEJN) has called for active citizen participation in tracking the budget so that it is implemented in line with the development needs of the people.

Mapanga said Malawians especially those living in rural need to know how much is allocated to their District Councils for development activities and how much is actually spent on the same.

MEJN Regional Coordinator for the North Freency Mapanga said this at the weekend in Mzimba during a civil society budget tracking meeting.

She said active participation in budget and other economic issues would help ensure that Councils formulate budgets and activities that address economic and development challenges.

“This therefore calls for participatory budgeting, planning and implementation of programmes that reflects on the needs of the communities,” she said.

Mapanga then urged District Councils to engage local development structures such as Village Development Committees and Area Development Committees in getting the projects input from the rural and resource-poor people.

The Regional Coordinator challenged CSOs working in Mzimba to civic educate the masses on how they could monitor budget expenditures and ensure that development projects are implemented according to the desired standard.

“CSOs are complementing government’s efforts to improve peoples’ lives. We need to work together and ensure that we meet peoples’ needs,” she said.
