Mutharika govt in K6.5 bn scam –Tembo

Malawi’s leader of opposition in Parliament John Tembo has accused government for illegally withdrawing K6.5 billion from Fuel Stabilization Fund account.

Tembo made the revelations in reaction to President Bingu wa Mutharika’s speech in Parliament last week, arguing government has to come in open to disclose how the money was spent.

“They have illegally withdrawn K6.5 billion from Fuel Stabilization Fund and how do you expect to solve the current fuel crisis if money is being stolen from account meant for such development?

“They have to come in open to explain where that money went. There is a big problem of fuel shortage in the country and money is being stolen meant to solve the problem,” Tembo said.

Tembo who is also leader for the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) promised to reveal more during his presentation in Parliament in response to Mutharika’s speech as leader of opposition.

On other hand, Tembo also accused government for trying to oppress the civil society, saying the civil groupings were contributing a lot to the development of this country.

“I don’t see any problem with civil society groups. These people are doing good job, they are contributing to the development of the country. There is need for government to stop oppressing them and start listening to their advice,” he added.

Mutharika has displayed his propensity to restrict the operations of the civil society with reports that government plans to introduce an oppressive legislation to suffocate NGOs work.

“The civil society has never done anything to Malawi. They don’t buy drugs in hospitals or fuel, all they know is sowing chaos. In fact, parliament must find means to have legislation that will make NGOs accountable to the House on their operations,” said Mutharika when he opened parliament on Friday.

Meanwhile, Tembo also accused government for failing to solve the forex shortage as well as other economic challenges facing the country.

“How would you solve forex shortage? The answer is by having forex. Government has to start listening to advice. It has to start working with other stakeholders, people who can help to solve these problems,” Tembo explained.

He dismissed Mutharika for asking the public to give him three years to solve the economic woes. Mutharika’s constitutional mandate ends in two years.

“How can you tell people to wait for three years to have answers to the problems affecting them today? It doesn’t make sense at all”, said Tembo.

“You see, the problem with this government is that it is running away from real issues. We have always asked them to bring these matters in parliament and find solution.”

   You must be having a laugh really, do your homework first before spouting nonsense. In austere times ((which is what we are going through), govts redirect resources to emergency sectors. I am told funds from the PSF were transferred to account #1, how is that theft? & Nyasa Times, you could do much better by conducting a little research Like 0 Reply
