The CCAP Synod of Livingstonia has joined calls asking for the immediate release of human rights lawyer Ralph Kasambala saying his arrest and incarceration has vindicated an assertion that that the Bingu wa Mutharika government is indeed tyrannical.

The Synod said if Kasambala is not released it will continue praying and also engage government in contact and dialogue.

“Our stand is that his arrest is painting a bad picture of Malawi globally because in the 21st century no body experts a government to arrest people without specific reasons or charges. Why do they fear to release him on bail?” Synod Head Reverend Levi Nyondo said.

Nyondo: Praying for Kasambara

Reverend Nyondo said this during a news conference held at Bandawe School for the Hearing Impaired in Nkhata Bay district on Friday.

Nyondo was at Bandawe to participate in the ground breaking ceremony of a Girls’ Hostel donated by Lions Aid Norway.

Malawi Police Service National Spokesperson Davie Chingwalu is on record saying Kasambara could not be released on bail because he was answering criminal charges.

“I don’t know whether he was saying that basing on the constitution of Malawi or anything else. When did they charge him? And if he had others and they have been bailed out, why not him?” Reverend Nyondo queried.

Reverend Nyondo the Synod is praying for the well being of Kasambala saying he is going through a very tough time.

“Today it might be Kasambara but tomorrow it could be someone else. So we are afraid that is this the democracy we fought for. I think something somewhere is wrong,” he said.

Kasambara’s arrest came days after weekly newspapers quoted him saying President Bingu wa Mutharika “wants to be a dictator” and should be impeached.

  2. Mukhi,

Does the Church have the welfare of Bingu at heart? Does the Church love its enemies? Does the Church pray for its enemies? What is the Church teaching the people whose ‘rights’ have been infringed upon? To love them & share the Gospel with them? To submit & pray for their oppressors?

I think I was wrong to call Livingstonia synod a Church. It is NOT a Church but a political party.

A Sad Com 32. Livingstonia is really a church and it has the welfare of people at heart. As a church we have a duty to ensure that justice is prevailing. Christianity is not only about preaching on the pulpit.

Whatever you think we will remain a united church and continue to advocate for the rights of the people until a better environment is created. Period!

  8. Livingstonia Synod forgets that it is a Church and not a political institution. Christians pray for everybody including their President.

  9. Bingu should resign or will be forced to leave office before 2014 as was the case at Comesa.Bingu has miserably failed to rule Malawi despite enjoying a parliamentary majority.

So Livingstonia Synod should also call for the pray for the resignation of this failed politician called Bingu.

By the way Bingu is so heartless and ungrateful that all the people like Bakili Muluzi and Kasambara who assisted him to either get to State house on a silver platter or defend his impeachment in 2004 and 2005 respectively are now his enemies.

There is no forex, no fuel today in Malawi because of the arrogance and undemocratic actions like the recent arrest of Kasambara.Instead of making Malawi a good place to live,Bingu is doing the opposite.Let him resign.

You DPP guys, you can see that you are digging for yourself a political grave over a small Kasambara issue.Dont you know that the same donor community that is supposed to give Malawi the much needed forex is closely following the Kasambara issue which borders on human rights. That is why Kapito said Bingu is surrounded by hand clappers who ill advises him all the time.
