Word Alive Ministries International, a religious NGO, says it is going to construct 32 toilets in eight Primary Schools in the area of Traditional Authority Mmbelwa in Mzimba in Mzimba district to promote toilet usage among primary school children.
According to the NGO, many pupils are using the nearby bushes around their schools as toilets due to the shortage of the facilities.
Apart from , the initiative is also meant to promote hygienic practices hence mitigate against waterborne diseases, the NGO said.
Besides the construction of toilets, Word Alive Ministries International will also provide 16 hand-washing facilities and train 24 teachers who will be responsible for ensuring that all the sanitary facilities are working properly and used accordingly.
The Organization’s Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer for Mzimba Malani Nyirenda told NyasaTimes that the project seeks to create an enabling learning environment, which would help in enhancing school enrollment and retention especially for the girl child.
“We want to improve on enrollment and reduce the prevalence of waterborne diseases such as Cholera and diarrhea,” Nyirenda said.
Nyirenda further said his organization would also introduce health inspection in schools within their impact area so that children embrace hygiene and sanitary practices.
World Alive Ministries International is implementing a five year integrated child centered approach to providing essential services project in T/A Mmbelwa.
