Malawian man caged for 2 years over human body parts trade

A  First Grade Magistrate Court in Mzimba district has jailed a 23 year old man to two years imprisonment with hard labour for attempting to sell human private body parts to businessman for use to boost his business.

Mzimba Police Station spokesma Sergeant Gift Nyirongo said in a statement made available to Nyasa Time that the convict, Collings William Sibande, went to Embangweni Trading Centre where he met the businessmen Oliver Ngwenya at his shop and offered for sale private parts of his 19 year old cousin Moses Ngwira.

But Ngwenya tipped Police about Sibande’s offer.

According to police spokesman,  Sibande had intended to cut and remove his cousin’s private parts if Ngwenya had agreed to buy them.justice

The convict was charged with the offence of ‘Attempting Grievous Harm’ contrary to section 238 as read with section 402 of the Penal Code.

In his judgement, Magistrate Maston Paulos Phiri said it is duty of the Court to reduce such kind of offences by giving stiffer penalties that should act as a deterrent.

He further said that the two years sentence was also meant for him to reform.

The suspect hails from Kaluska Msimuko village, Traditional Authority M’mbelwa in Mzimba district.

Issues of cutting genitals have become very common in Malawi.

But Police do not keep statistics of how many people die in ritual murders.

Many locals believe human parts can bring riches, and unscrupulous businessmen and witchdoctors pay thousands of kwachas to poor locals to kill people and mutilate their bodies.

Private body parts of human beings are on a high demand by the witchdoctors and it is believed that people sell the penis and testicles abroad where they fetch a lot of money.
