Malawian rights campaigner drafted into ANCEFA Board

A Malawian civil rights activist Mc Ben Mkandawire who is a Board Chair of the Lilongwe-based Civil Society Education Coalition has been elected as the Africa Network Campaign on Education for All (ANCEFA) Moderator for Southern Africa and ANCEFA Board Member.

This is the first time a Malawian has made it into the Board since ANCEFA founding 12 years ago.

Policy & Advocacy Manager for ANCEF Limbani Eliya Nsapato says in statement which Nyasa Times possess that Mkandawire, who is also Executive Director of the Zomba-based Youths Network and Counselling Organization, was elected during the recent ANCEFA General Assembly held on November 10 in the Senegalese capital Dakar.

ANCEFA is a regional civil society network that brings together national education coalitions from across 35 countries in Africa. Its headquarters is in Dakar but it has regional offices in Kenya, Zambia and Togo.

“As ANCEFA Board member, Mr. Mkandawire will contribute towards managing and giving strategic direction to the network especially on regional policy discourse around education in Africa including pushing countries to accelerate education goals by 2015 as well as ensuring that the post 2015 global education and MDG agenda take the needs and priorities of Africa” says Nsapato.

Nsapato says during the general assembly delegates adopted a number of policy motions on accelerating education for all progress, post 2015b agenda, domestic financing, protecting civil society activists and African Union Second Decade on education.

One of the policy motions calls on African Union Member States and AUC Partners to align their strategic plans with the African Union Second Education Decade.

The list of new office bearers : Chair: Mr Pastor Reinaldo Jeorge Sive from Mozambique while his Vice is Ms Blandine Ky from Burkina Faso.

The Board Members are; Mrs Zono Jammeh from Gambia , Lemessa Dessalegn from Ethiopia , Ali Bakatuseka Kabengele from DRC and Macbain MKandawire from Malawi .
