Malawians injured in high-speed Tanzanian bus crash
Ten people were Thursday rushed to Mzuzu Central Hospital after sustaining various injuries while several others escaped unhurt after a Tanzanian passenger bus they were travelling in overturned in Chikangawa.
The bus, belonging to Taqwa Bus Company of Dar es Salaam was travelling to Lilongwe from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.
According to Mzuzu Police Spokesperson Maurice Chapola, the accident occurred at a place called Elamuleni, which boarders Mzuzu City and Mzimba.
Chapola said the accident happened because the driver, who is currently at large, was over speeding and upon reaching the scene he failed to control the wheel, causing the bus to veer off before overturning.
Of the 10 injured passengers, eight were reportedly treated as outpatients while two, who endured serious injuries and their particulars are yet to be identified, are admitted to Mzuzu Central Hospital. It was clearly not known how many passengers were on board but generally Tanzania buses always exceed the seating capacity and over speed.
Most of the passengers that use Taqwa are cross boarder business people who operate between Dar es Salaam and Malawi.
In 2011, another Taqwa bus travelling from Dar es Salaam to Lilongwe was involved in a fatal accident that occurred in Karonga district due to over speeding and several people lost their lives.
