Malawi’s football club accident claims two people: Chinakanaka
Two people died when a football team, Chinakanaka, was involved in an accident on its way from a match on Sunday at Likhubula River bridge in Mulanje District.
Jimmy Maloya, Secretray for Mulanje Mountain Conservation League confirmed on Monday that the one of the casualties was player of Mozambican national – who was playing for the team – while the other one was a supporter.
He said the accident left several fans injured and were rushed to Mulanje District Hospital and Mulanje Mission for treatment.
Maloya said the accident happened when the driver of the three-tonne vehicle lost control after hitting a cyclist at the Likhubula Bridge.
“It’s two people who have died while others were refered to Mulanje District and Mulanje Mission Hospitals where they are being treated,” he said.
“So far most of the injured have been discharged and we have seven still admitted at Mulanje District Hospital and 11 at Mulanje Mission with mainly head injuries and some hip injuries and limbs.”
One of the Traffic Policers, who was on the scene of the accident blamed the accident on overloading.
“The vehicle was overloaded with around 50 people,” said the Police officer, who did not want to be identified because he is not an official spokesperson for the district.
Two months ago Malawi’s top league side Tazam Tigers was involved in an accident in the steep slope of Thyolo Escarpment near Thabwa Road Block in Chikhwawa, which left six players critically injured.
