The judges praised Kanjere’s work and described the journalist as a creative and resourceful writer.

“The article was a preview for the COSAFA Cup Zambia 2013 quarter-final between Zimbabwe and Malawi, but with a twist. A strong introduction draws immediate interest from the reader and takes the angle of a coach looking to make up for the disappointment of not being able to fulfil a past post and is now plotting his revenge,” reads the statement.

“The winning article was well researched with quotes that add value to the story. It is also written in an easily-readable, conversational style.”

Kanjere who is also  correspondent for Supersport was named Malawi’s Sports Journalist of The Year.

He has won several other awards in recent months as he was named the best print reporter for the Standard Bank Knock-Out Trophy in November last year and in March this year, he was also voted the best print journalist for the TNM Super League.

However, the winner of the photographic prize went to a Zambian  Jean Ndayisenga Mandela, who also pocketed R10 000.

Zambia went on to beat Zimbabwe in a thrilling Cup final played on Saturday.

Alex N’gonga scored the first goal after four minutes and substitute Kabaso Chongo sealed success two minutes into stoppage time.
