Malawi’s Nyimbo music starts online radio
Nyimbo Music Company (NMC), one of the entertainment firms in Malawi has started an online radio which is streaming the country’s music globally.
Radio Nyimbo, operating at Nyimbo Studios in Lilongwe, will promote Malawian music across the world as the country’s music industry is on the rise.
According to Daud Suleman, NMC CEO, the radio will fill the entertainment gap that is Malawian on the internet.
Suleman says the radio mostly targets Malawians in diaspora who are hungry for local content.
“There is an already excited market of listeners out there in diaspora hungry for the classic Malawian music,” he says.
He observes that internet adoption in Malawi is high, with a good percentage of cell phones in the country connecting to the internet, “mostly to eat Facebook data”.
“Online radio is very interactive; engagement with listeners is more personal through social networks [and] cheaper to establish,” says the NMC founder.
Suleman is optimistic that the online radio will benefit Malawian musicians so much as it easily reaches a wider audience across the globe.
The radio station will be turned into a purchasing market by connecting the radio with an online store, which the company is developing.
“Radio Nyimbo will be closely linked to another online music store from Nyimbo which will enable listeners to listen to a song, search for it and buy it online, regardless of them being in Malawi or outside Malawi.
“[This] opens up a new market to artists, which is cheap to tap into plus cost of delivering the product is by far reduced hence increasing the profit margin to the artist.”
As indicated by Suleman, the online music store is currently under advanced development and will soon be released.
He discloses that the online platform will work closely with local banks and international payment gateways, opening up online selling and buying options to the local artist in Malawi.
Radio Nyimbo is working on creating a wholesale music experience in Malawi that extends to all media facets, from radio, to internet, to TV, to the Mobile phone.
Radio Nyimbo is also going on establishing a radio station that will cover the whole country.
“We have all the necessary equipment and capital to undertake our entry into FM broadcasting in Malawi.
“We shall execute an innovative and creative Radio station in Malawi through heavy use of technology which shall see Radio Nyimbo becoming national within the fastest time,” reveals Suleman.
