Tembo said the situation had made Malawi to under perform in most international competition.

The former Malawi National Council of Sports Executive Secretary and lecturer in US made the remarks during a sports journalists course in Blantyre over the weekend organised by Malawi Olympic Committee.

“What we are doing in Malawi is wrong. We are putting them at risk when we allow them to participate without preparations,” Dr Tembo said.

His observation comes barely three weeks after Malawi’s top boxers Ernest Msoliza and Limbani Masamba were humiliated on home soil in world boxing on the sidelines of World Boxing Council meeting held from May 12 to 14.

Malawi national football team’s poor performance in the Africa Cup of Nations among others is attributed to poor performance.

He also urged sports journalist to cast their net wide in the coverage of sporting disciplines rather than just football and netball which are popular in Malawi.
