Malawi’s ruling PP governor for south resigns: Ali M’balaka

The ruling People’s Party’s (PP) governor for the Southern Province, Ali M’balaka has resigned from his position, citing personal reasons.

PP’s Publicity Secretary Hophmally Makande told Daily Times newspaper that M’balaka – who was one of the people helped in the establishment of PP – tendered his resignation letter through his aide at the party’s office in Blantyre on Thursday.

The paper reported that M’balaka has succumbed to pressure from the party’s leadership for him to resign or risk being fired on accusation of associating with the opposition.

Accoridng to the report, he was told to voluntarily relinquish the position following accusation of having links with undisclosed a rival opposition party.

But Makande explained that “ nobody forced him to resign”, expressing the hope that the party will assign him some other duties.
