Man, 33 commit suicide over family responsibility in Malawi

A 33 year-old man from Chakanza village, Traditional Authority Nsamala in southern district of Balaka hanged himself to death upon learning that his wife and children went to bed on empty stomach.

The deceased, Wisky James committed suicide by hanging himself last Thursday near Jehovah’s Witness camp site along Magalasi-old Chileka road in Blantyre.

The deceased’s wife, Elizabeth Muliya James, 28, who also hails from Chakanza village in Balaka, told Blantyre Police that her husband had earlier left K200 for the family to buy food items for breakfast, lunch and supper, but apparently the money was not enough to cater for the material day’s food.

“He left home for work at Chirimba Garments where he was working as a tailor. He left K200 to cater for breakfast, lunch and supper. He came back home around 8pm and noticed that his wife and children went to bed without taking food.suicide

“The same night, he suddenly left the house and never came back until the next day when he was seen hanging himself dead in a tree near Jehovah’s Witness camp site,” said Blantyre Police Publicist Lameck Thembachako.

In another development, Wegson Msolo, 35 from Chinakanaka village, Traditional Authority Mkanda in Mulanje district died on Sunday after taking excessive alcohol on empty stomach.

Msolo, who was a carpenter, was allegedly seen drinking different beverages of sachet spirits mixed with locally brewed Kachasu.

He is said to have left the drinking joint around 10 pm for his house to retire, but he was found dead in the house the next morning.
