Man arrested for impersonating Malawi Police officer

Police in Ntcheu have arrested a 38 year old man for being suspected to have impersonated himself as a police officer.

The suspect William Kachepa who hails from Gwaza-Songwe Village in the area of Senior Chief Kwataine was arrested Thursday night as police were on patrol in the district.

 Ntcheu Police deputy publicist Hastings Chigalu said on his arrest, the suspect had a handcuff and was putting on camouflaged police regalia with a chevron representing a rank of a sergeant.

“The suspect who after being approached by the law enforcers started running away and luckily enough he was apprehended as he did not go a long distance,” said Chigalu.

Meanwhile, police have just charged the suspect with an offence of bringing contempt on police uniform contrary to section 191 sub section 2 of the Penal code which attracts a fine of 60 British Pounds equivalent to about K40,OOO or in default serve 9 months imprisonment with had labour.

However, the police publicist was quick to say as police will still investigate thoroughly on the matter as for the past weeks, the country has witnessed incidents of robbery in which suspects were seen putting on police regalia citing as an example in Dedza where a local bank was robbed of millions of Kwachas by robbers who eye witness say wore police uniform.
