A 29-year-old man is in Police custody at Kanengo for allegedly threatening a person with albinism that he (the man) would make the latter disappear one day.
Kanengo Police spokesperson Esther Mkwanda identified the suspect as John Chikadza of Chigwe Village, Traditional Authority Kabudula in Lilongwe.
Mkwanda alleged that Chikadza had more than once threatened the man with albinism (name withheld) that one day he would make him disappear because by having albinism, the man was worth millions.
She said first Chikadza had told the man with albinism over the phone that ‘Iwe tsiku lina ndizakusowetsa chifukwa ndiwe mgodi kale (One day I’ll make you disappear because you are a mine on your own)’.
Then later in the week Chikadza repeated the same threats right in the face of the man with albinism who was accompanied by his sister.
These remarks, made in the wake of abduction, killing and removing of body parts of people with albinism, alerted the man with albinism’s sister who alerted the community leaders.
In turn, the community leaders alerted the community policing committee in the area who apprehended Chikadza and handed him to police.
Chikadza is being charged with intimidation, contrary to Section 88 of the Penal Code and he is expected to appear before court soon, according to Mkwanda.
