Man commits suicide after swindling K5, 000

Reports from Malawi’s eastern district of Balaka indicate that a 29-year -old man has committed suicide after swindling K5, 000 meant for to his in-law.

The districts’ police spokesperson sub-inspector Joseph Sauka told Nyasa Times that the deceased, Elias Paul, sold the bricks for his in-law to a certai buyer on credit at K5, 000  and was given some days to collect the money.

“After collecting the cash, the deceased swindled the money and told the owner that he he was yet to collect the money,” Sauka said

The police publicist explained that after sometime the owner of the bricks made a follow up and discovered that Paul had already collected the money

“But when asked he insisted that he has not received the cash; and they agreed to meet the buyer the following day but thereafter he committed suicide by hanging himself in a Mango tree in his maize garden and was spotted the following morning. “

Post-mortem conducted at Balaka District Hospital revealed that death was caused due strangulation.

The deceased has left a wife and three children; and was coming from Mwalabu village, Traditional Authority Amidu in Balaka district. He was residing at Kanyumbayaka village, Traditional Authority Nsamala in the same district.

Meanwhile, Police in the district is appealing to the general public not to commit suicide when they are in problems but seek other means of solving the problems.
