Man jailed 12 years for sexual assault on girl, 6

The Mulanje First Grade Magistrate Court on Wednesday sentenced Mike Zuze to 12 years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL) for defiling a six-year-old girl.

Zuze, 22 years old, committed the offence on 20th August this year at a place called Muhowa in the district.

The victim, who stays in Blantyre with her mother, met her fate while she was in the district for holidays with her elder sister.

According to information presented in court, it was her mother who noted a strange smell emanating from her daughter’s private parts, thus, after she returned home from the holidays.

Upon quizzed, the victim revealed that she had been defiled by convict.

The issue was reported at Machinjiri Police Station that referred the case to Nkando Police unit (under Mulanje Police Station) who eventually arrested Zuze.

Although the medical report confirmed the victim was indeed defiled, Zuze insisted on being innocent until the court proved him guilty after full trial.

In his submission, the police prosecutor Gladstone Kanyezi asked the court to impose a stiff penalty considering that the girl will be psychologically affected for life following the incident.

First Grade Magistrate Soka Banda concurred with the State, saying defilement cases are on the rise in the district.

To deter would-be-offenders, Magistrate Banda slapped Zuze with 12 years imprisonment with hard labour for defilement which is contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.

Zuze hails from Muhowa village, Traditional Authority Nkanda in the district.
