Man survives two suicidal attempts in Malawi over marriage woes

A 61-year-old man is battling for his life at Kamuzu Central Hospital in the Capital City Lilongwe after his intentions to commit suicide failed following prolonged marital problems.

Nkhotakota Police Station spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino said the wife of the suspect identified as Ephraim Malunga from Chikunichaola village, Traditional Authority Mphonde in Nkhotakota District on 24 April 2013 discovered him trying to hang himself in their  bedroom.

According to Lubrino, on the same day, again the suspect jumped from a cruising motor vehicle, which he boarded with members of community policing during the time they wanted to hand him to Police.

He sustained head injuries.suicide

“On the particular day his wife accused him for contributing the downfall of her Kachasu business. She also accused him of stealing one bottle of Kachasu,” Police said.

The Police Publicist said Police took the suspect to Nkhotakota District Hospital but due to his critical condition, the District Hospital later referred him to Kamuzu Central Hospital.

The man is expected to answer charges of attempting suicide as soon as he recovers, Police said.
