The seven escaped from the prison after digging a hole in a prison toilet.

Mangochi Police Officer in Charge Jonas Chimoto said among those who escaped are those on murder charges.

He said the criminals used a knife and an old axe handle to break through the toilet wall.

“Two of those who escaped are extremely dangerous. They are serving a sentence and they are also facing murder charges,” he said.

He was optimistic the law enforcers would catch the criminals.
