Mary Waya qualifies as first netball tutor in Africa

Netball legend Mary Waya has done Malawi proud by becoming the first netball tutor in Africa after successfully completing African Coaching and Officiating Framework (ACOF) course.

International Netball Federation (INF) Chief Executive Officer Clare Briegal wrote Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) in a letter dated 7 April, 2014, addressed to (NAM) President Rose Chinunda that Waya’s exploits would place her in a position to conduct courses within Africa.

“I am writing to congratulate Malawi on having the first qualified ACOF Coaching Tutor/Presenter in Africa – Mary Waya. This is an outstanding achievement and enables INF to appoint Mary to deliver training courses in Coaching, not only in Malawi, but also in other Member countries in Africa,” states the letter.

Waya, who is also national netball coach, successfully completed the course in Ethiopia after being mentored and assessed by Liz Broomhead, INF Volunteer and Development Advisor.

The course was led by Anita Navin, INF Coaching Advisory Panel member, according to the statement.

INF also said Waya’s success had offered Malawi an opportunity to establish Coach Education and Development Programme for Malawi.

“This also provides an opportunity for NAM to establish a Coach Education and Development programme in Malawi from April 2014 to March 2015. The creation of a formal coaching accreditation programme with your sports council or NOC would be a great step for Malawi Netball,” the statement adds.

Waya was all smiles for her feat saying that it was not easy.

“It was tough and I am happy that I have managed to do it and be recognised as the first tutor and presented of Coach Education and Development Programme in Africa,” Waya said.
