Matchaya tips Malawians on hospital operations

The Blantyre District Health Officer (DHO) has tipped Malawians on hospital operations as regards to patient consultation saying many people jump to conclusions that medical personnel do not attend to them on time.

Matchaya tips on operations

In an interview Dr Medson Matchaya stipulated that work in public hospitals normally starts at 7:30am  however, operations start with other activities such as handovers in order to effectively carry out their subsequent duties effectively.

A number of cases have been observed in a number of hospitals across the country where patients lash out at medical personnel for not attending to them immediately after the doors of health centers open.

“In a hospital setup unlike health centers, the routine usually starts with morning handovers where health workers discuss complicated cases seen during the night that need other day staff to take note and assist properly thereby delaying the attendance of patients,” said Matchaya.

According to Dr Matchaya, the hospital setup may differ from that of health centers which usually start their operations at 7:30 but may sometimes have justifiable reasons for their delay in assisting patients that are already on queues upon the facility’s opening.

Commenting on the matter in a separate interview, a Blantyre resident Esnart Chilombo placed the blame on nurses on duty saying they do this deliberately.

“Each time l visit the hospitals, nurses are busy doing their own things instead of attending to patients,” said Chilombo.

Despite people’s opinions towards hospital operations, the DHO emphasized that it is not that those on duty are not doing anything but rather they sometimes have some important meetings before attending to the patients.
